What Runs Through The Heart Review

What Runs through the Heart

By Amie Wolf

Life on the farm was hard.

At least Demi had to assume it was. She couldn’t remember any other type of existence she might have been born into—only the one surrounded by rutted dirt, where she kept her head down and relied on her gut to know when to duck.

She was either brave or crazy, sneaking through those trees that hid the creek. It was probably the latter, considering the genetics of the self-destructive mother who’d left her to rot there… She shook it off, like she did every time she ran through those woods in a blur that would clear with the sight of his face. Dylan was worth the risk she blatantly ignored—he was worth everything, waiting down there by the water.

But as age and circumstance change him, she’s forced to realize it’s not an inherent madness swimming back and forth in her brain. It’s something else, something that controls everything growing in the fields she’s been strategically set in, and it proves she’s not a simple girl with roots in rural Iowa.

***MY HONEST REVIEW OF What Runs through the Heart***

Demi never knew her mother. She was raised by her Aunt Jenna. Her Aunt’s husband John was an abusive alcoholic who terrorized and beat Jenna and Demi. When Jenna started school, she met Dylan, who also came from a dysfunctional home. As they grew older, they fell in love. Their friendship had been a secret all along, to protect Demi from John. Dylan and Demi make plans to run away and be married, but as it draws closer, Uncle John becomes suspicious making it nearly impossible for Demi to get away. But she has a secret weapon that even she is unaware of.

This was an enjoyable read, with an entertaining plot. The main character brought depth to the drama that was her life. I liked the suspense scattered throughout, always making me wonder how it would eventually turn out. In fact, it caught me by surprise in the turn of events near the end. I look forward to continuing this story.
